Of the 12 California ZIP codes where QuoteMoto received at least two auto insurance quote requests between November 2025 and May 18, 2026, eight are in Northern California. The median monthly quotes in those ZIPs ran from $12 in Hayward (ZIP 94544) and $13.50 in South Los Angeles (ZIP 90002) at the bottom, up to $50.71 in Hollywood Hills (ZIP 90046) at the top of the cheapest tier.

This is a small-sample, initial-quote dataset, not a binding rate study. The numbers below come from QuoteMoto-brand quote requests filtered to ZIPs with at least two quote requests. They reflect what shoppers were quoted at QuoteMoto''s entry funnel, which skews toward minimum-coverage drivers and non-standard situations like prior DUI, no prior coverage, or SR-22 filings. None of these numbers should be read as average California auto insurance rates for all drivers.

The ranking, lowest median monthly quote first:

  1. Hayward (94544): $12.00 median across 2 quotes
  2. Watts area, South Los Angeles (90002): $13.50 median across 2 quotes
  3. San Francisco, SOMA (94103): $19.50 median across 2 quotes
  4. Pittsburg, East Bay (94565): $21.00 median across 3 quotes
  5. Richmond (94801): $23.36 median across 2 quotes
  6. Laguna Niguel, Orange County (92677): $23.63 median across 2 quotes
  7. Carmel Valley, San Diego (92130): $32.99 median across 2 quotes
  8. San Francisco, Mission (94110): $39.39 median across 2 quotes
  9. Chula Vista (91911): $44.40 median across 2 quotes
  10. Daly City (94014): $45.10 median across 2 quotes
  11. Fresno (93727): $46.39 median across 2 quotes
  12. Hollywood Hills / West Hollywood (90046): $50.71 median across 2 quotes

Bay Area or Bay Area-adjacent ZIPs occupy positions 1, 3, 4, 5, 8, and 10. Six of the top twelve. That contradicts the popular narrative that Bay Area auto insurance is universally more expensive than SoCal, at least for QuoteMoto''s minimum-coverage shopper segment.

Why the inversion may exist. Several factors plausibly contribute. California auto insurance pricing weights claim frequency heavily, and SoCal metros (Los Angeles, Orange County, Inland Empire) have among the highest claim frequencies in the country. Driver density and miles driven also enter the calculation. Bay Area drivers in dense urban ZIPs may drive fewer miles than SoCal commuters and may file fewer claims per insured.

The QuoteMoto sample is small. The ZIPs with two quotes each are weak statistical evidence, and the headline ranking should be read as anecdotal not predictive. The fact that the inversion shows up at all, even in a small sample, is what makes the pattern reportable.

How national price-comparison sites compare. MoneyGeek reported in May 2026 that California ranks 46th most affordable for full coverage at $155 per month, with GEICO cheapest for minimum coverage at $39 per month and full coverage at $90 per month among 10 providers analyzed. QuoteMoto''s monthly medians at $12 to $50 in the cheapest-tier ZIPs sit well below GEICO''s minimum-coverage benchmark, which is consistent with the minimum-coverage skew of QuoteMoto''s incoming shopper traffic.
